Arno Barnard is a seasoned mining executive with over 10 years of experience across Africa, working with junior and senior gold, tin, and copper mining companies. He has held key positions at Endeavour Mining, Impala Terminals (Trafigura), Metorex Mining, and has provided consulting services for Randgold Resources.
Arno possesses a comprehensive understanding of the entire mining value chain, having worked in various departments ranging from operations management to compliance. Currently serving as the Head of Sustainability at Andrada Mining (previously Afritin Mining), he manages the ESG, HSE, HR, and IT departments (including mine closure and tailings governance).
In his current role, Arno has made significant contributions to the organization by solidifying the company’s safety culture and implementing industry-leading processes and procedures. He is dedicated to driving local talent development and fostering a positive work environment for all employees.
Arno’s expertise extends beyond day-to-day operations, as he has successfully integrated ESG principles into the company’s operating model. Under his leadership, Andrada Mining has rolled out its first sustainability report and developed a comprehensive mine closure plan in collaboration with stakeholders. He has also defined a forward-thinking 5-year strategy, incorporating climate risk assessment, biodiversity strategies, and water stewardship programs.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Arno is currently pursuing a research thesis on integrated mine closure at the University of Witwatersrand, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field. His key interests lie in process optimization, systems thinking, complexity theory, systems modeling, dynamics, threshold theories, integrated mine closure, and transdisciplinary work.
