Justine Sweet

Admitted as an attorney in 2005, Justine has more than fifteen years’ experience as an attorney, particularly in relation to environmental law.  After a decade as an external attorney, she joined Sasol, a South African petrochemical and mining company, as a Safety, Health and Environmental Principal Legal Specialist.  There, her involvement ranged from day-to-day compliance support and advice and ranging from greenfield to brownfield projects to supporting on strategic environmental initiatives.  She now consults to, amongst others, Herbert Smith Freehills which has a strong, global ESG practice as well as a large multinational organization which places high priority on ESG related matters. 

She has experience advising multiple sectors including mining, paper and pulp, energy, petrochemical, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, aviation, government and waste management.  Most recently she was an integral member of the Herbert Smith Freehills team responsible for drafting the environmental, mine closure, financial guarantee and health and safety regulations for the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources. 

She is the co-regional chairperson (Gauteng) of the South African Environmental Law Association.
